A Look at Hermès’ Petit h

Petit h represents a unique approach within the luxury industry, focusing on creative and sustainable use of materials. Founded by Pascale Mussard, a sixth-generation member of the Hermès family, Petit h was inspired by her childhood experiences in the Hermès workshops and stores. The inception of Petit h traces back to a moment when a craftsman created a wallet from discarded leather, which successfully sold after being displayed in a store window.

Since its establishment in 2010, Petit h has been dedicated to upcycling—transforming leftover luxury materials from Hermès’ other product lines into new, unique objects. This commitment is succinctly expressed in its motto: “Nothing is lost, everything is transformed and an object is created.” This philosophy guides the brand’s artisans in their work, utilizing materials such as leather, silk, crystal, and porcelain to craft innovative products. These range from functional items like leather-topped stools and wall shelves to whimsical creations such as salt shakers with button lids and decorative boxes featuring playful designs.

Under the guidance of current creative director Godefroy de Virieu, Petit h employs a team of eight artisans who focus on reimagining these leftover materials into new forms. The results are not only sustainable but also inject a playful creativity into the objects they create.

Petit h maintains a permanent presence at the Hermès store on Rue de Sèvres in Paris and annually travels to different cities to showcase its creations in collaboration with local artists. This year, from October 11 to October 26, Petit h will feature at the Hermès flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York. The showcase includes a storefront installation designed by Dominican-American conceptual artist Lucia Hierro, reflecting the local culture and the brand’s innovative ethos.

Through its creations, Petit h illustrates how luxury and sustainability can coexist, providing a model for the industry that emphasizes the potential for creativity in reusing and transforming materials.
