Patek Philippe Introduces the Cubitus Collection

Patek Philippe has recently introduced the Cubitus collection, its first new line in 25 years, following the discontinuation of the widely admired Nautilus 5711. The launch marks a notable shift for the brand, blending a fresh design approach with Patek Philippe’s established heritage.

Launched in 1976, the Nautilus, particularly the 5711 reference, became one of Patek Philippe’s most recognized models. Its unique porthole-inspired design and stainless steel construction added a contemporary edge that resonated with a broad audience. Over the years, the demand for Nautilus consistently exceeded supply, leading to long waitlists and strong secondary market prices. In 2021, Patek Philippe discontinued the 5711, closing a significant chapter for the brand.

On October 17, 2024, Patek Philippe unveiled the Cubitus collection, aiming to blend boldness with elegance. The Cubitus features a distinctive square case with rounded corners, a departure from the traditional round designs. The initial lineup includes three models. This collection aims to attract a younger, urban clientele, offering a fresh take on Patek Philippe’s design philosophy.

The Cubitus collection has elicited mixed reactions from the watch community. Some enthusiasts appreciate Patek Philippe’s venture into new design territory, viewing it as a bold move that reflects the brand’s innovative spirit. However, others have expressed reservations, citing concerns over the square case design and its departure from the classic aesthetics that have long defined the brand. Discussions on various platforms highlight these divided opinions, with some praising the modern approach while others remain skeptical about its alignment with Patek Philippe’s heritage.

In response to the criticism, Patek Philippe’s president, Thierry Stern, has addressed the feedback by suggesting that detractors may not fully appreciate the brand’s direction and may not be part of the brand’s customer base. As the Cubitus collection makes its way into the market, it remains to be seen how it will be embraced by both long-time collectors and new enthusiasts.
